First Year Seminar

The Student Academic Success Programs department creates and organized this first-year student success initiative. The Writing Program collaborates in two ways.

First Year Seminar Course & English 101 Cohort Model

In this learning environment, students in a specific cohort attend two distinct courses, together. They each enroll in a single First Year Seminar course; these are designed to satisfy the 100-level Justice Core requirement and, therefore, all have a “justice” element. Additionally, they all take part in the same section of English 101, together.

English 133 First Year Seminar Course

In the First Year Seminar course, English 133: Language and Justice, students in work to explore four large questions: What is justice? How does language work in my life and in my community? How does justice work in my life and in my community? How does language get used to enact, deny, and/or obfuscate (blur/confuse) justice? As a group, students and the instructor unpack number of justice-related issues using linguistic, rhetorical, and sociological tools of analysis. They look closely at spoken, written, and visual discourse to see ways that language shapes who they are, influences how they think of others, motivates them to action or inaction, and changes the direction of individual lives, communities, and nations. Students will go from this course into the rest of their college education (and beyond) with their ear finely tuned to how people control language that affects themselves and a sense of how they can use language to advocate for justice.
